School fully open to studentsPosted: 2nd October 2020
Our business-focused school and sixth form has welcomed back students who are benefitting from industry standard equipment.
Having been closed to students for six months due to the Coronavirus outbreak, BMAT STEM Academy is now fully open to all of our Year 10, 11 and 12 students.
September also marked the launch of the unique school’s sixth form, with the first cohort settling into their year group bubble and able to use state-of-the-art equipment to support their learning.
Head of school Dustin Schuyler said: “The best thing for our students is to be in school every day. We are a small school and so are able to utilise our building and facilities the way they are meant to be.
“Of course, we have lots of new safety measures in place, but our students are extremely mature and have adjusted well. We have staggered start and finish times and breaks and lunchtimes are split. Each year group bubble has its own area of the building to ensure they don’t mix and there is a one-way system in place. We have tripled the number of cleaners we have and there is a deep clean of the building at the end of each day and students sanitise after each lesson.
“In the event of any confirmed cases of Covid-19, we are set up to teach our students remotely. But, we are pleased to see them in school and learning with their teachers and the specialist equipment we provide.
“This is where we want them to be, in school and able to have practical lessons.”
BMAT STEM Academy caters for students from Year 10 upwards with a keen interest in the science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects.
Subjects such as engineering and 3D design are offered, with expert teachers and professional equipment used by industry not generally seen in sixth forms or colleges.
The school works closely with professional sponsors, including Princess Alexandra Hospital, Gratnells, GlaxoSmithKline, Raytheon and Pearson Education, to give young people real-world experience in industry.
Mr Schuyler said: “We are able to tap into our industry contacts to ensure we continue to deliver our careers curriculum. We are offering an outside curriculum to our students without them having to leave the building, with live broadcasts and virtual experiences.
“We are a growing school with a unique curriculum.”
