What is Computer Science all about?
Computer Science has computational thinking at its core, helping students to develop the skills to solve problems, design systems and understand human and machine intelligence. It allows students to apply the academic principles to real world systems in an exciting and engaging manner.
The course is a technical, work-related course designed for those wishing to learn how to be professionals in the computing industry. You will complete projects and assignments based on realistic workplace situations and business scenarios.
Topics can include:
- computer systems (hardware and installation)
- big data (researching and using data)
- spreadsheets and database development
- graphic design and web scripting
- games development
- mobile engineering
- business use of social media
Mathematical concepts are at the very heart of computing, and you will need to understand concepts and number systems, whilst a keen interest in technology outside of the classroom is absolutely essential too.

You may also choose to start work in the industry at a more junior level immediately after completing your Level 3; you can apply for positions such as IT technician or web developer.
How will I be assessed?
The course is delivered as a combination of theory and practical, and you will be assessed through both a portfolio and external assessment for core units set by the exam board.
Internal assessments use a wide variety of methods including presentations, reports, posters, podcasts, role-plays and interactive quizzes.
Entry requirements are a minimum of 5 GCSEs grade 5 including Maths and English Language. If taken Computer Science at GCSE we would require a grade 5 or vocational qualification equivalent.
