The first cohort of students due to study at a brand-new sixth form are celebrating securing their places this week.

BMAT STEM Academy will open the doors to its sixth form for the first time in September.

Having opened to Year 10 just two years ago, this will be the business focused school’s first group of students to pass through the school and into the sixth form.

Ashton Cox, from Harlow, is going to study computer science, biology and maths at BMAT STEM, securing his place with eight grade 8 and two grade 7.

He said: “I did not know what to expect from the results, but I felt really good when I opened them. I do think I deserved these results.

“I am looking forward to my computer science course as that is my passion. I was set a coding project over the summer, which gave me a taste of what is to come.

“I know the school has a lot of links with its industry sponsors, so I am looking forward to lots of engagement with them.”

Josh Burling, from Harlow, will study physics, chemistry and maths at the sixth form after collecting five grade 7 and five grade 6.

He said: “I feel brilliant. I was nervous waiting for the results, especially as I didn’t get to sit the exams myself. After opening my results, I was ecstatic!

“I feel like the school has done well already. I know the teachers and they know how to improve me further. It is going to be different to school, but I know what I want to do, so lessons will be even more specific to my needs. It will be really enjoyable as I will be in lessons with people who want to do what I want to do.”

Gergo Sohonyai, from Harlow, is keen to become an architect and so is studying double engineering and double 3D design. He collected one grade 9, one grade 8, five grade 7 and two grade 6 this week.

He said: “I had read in the papers that students were not happy with their grades, so that put me in a panicked state. I did not want to open them at first. But, I am happy with my results; I am relieved.

“I did 3D design in my first year at BMAT STEM and really enjoyed it, so I want to do more of it.

“The last two years have been brilliant; I have enjoyed it and can’t wait for this. The fact you are treated like adults is something I appreciate. There are only about 50 students in a year group which means the teachers get to know us really well and can work with our strengths and weaknesses.

“I am excited to start in the sixth form. There are new facilities for us in the sixth form, new places to be and new students to meet.”

Sara Eizeddin arrived in England from Denmark last year, joining BMAT STEM Academy in Year 11 speaking little English. Despite the language barrier, she picked up two grade 9, one grade 7, two grade 6, one grade 5 and two grade 4.

She will now study maths, biology and chemistry at the sixth form, with hopes of going on to study medicine and become a doctor.

She said: “I feel my results are so good and I deserve them.

“I am looking forward to continuing to study at BMAT STEM as it offers high quality education.”
